The Center for Victims of Torture is seeking a Physiotherapist/Trainer to join our program in Jordan addressing the rehabilitation needs of Syrian and Iraqi refugees. The Trainer works as part of an interdisciplinary team to oversee physiotherapy interventions, including individual and group services with adults and children who are survivors or torture and war trauma. This position also provides supervision, coaching and training to a team of physiotherapists and ensures high quality interdisciplinary care through collaboration with counseling, social work and outreach staff. The Trainer provides education and support to help other organizations better meet the needs of torture and war trauma survivors.

The position reports to the Lead Clinician (administrative supervisor) and Clinical Advisor for Physiotherapy (clinical supervisor). The Physiotherapist/Trainer participates as a member of a team of Clinician/Trainers who oversee clinical work in Jordan.

The Center for Victims of Torture works toward a future in which torture ceases to exist and its victims have hope for a new life. We are an international nonprofit dedicated to healing survivors of torture. We offer rehabilitation services to those who have been tortured, train partners around the world who can prevent and treat torture, and advocate for human rights and an end to torture. We are headquartered in Minnesota, and we have US offices in Atlanta and DC, as well as offices in Africa and the Middle East.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Supervision: Hire, orient, coach, mentor and develop a team of physiotherapists through ongoing feedback, as well as formal performance management systems. Model assessment and treatment methods, lead case consultations, conduct observations and debriefings, and review documentation. Meet regularly with staff members individually and as a group to monitor progress, provide staff support and promote self-care.
  • Clinical Management: Assist in the day-to-day operations of the program to ensure program objectives are met and activities are implemented at the highest standards of quality. Coordinate the physiotherapy team to optimize performance and autonomy. Promote collaboration between clinical (physiotherapy, counseling and social work) and administrative teams. Participate in the review and development of assessment documentation, treatment manuals and outcome measurement tools.
  • Training: Design and carryout regular training programs for physiotherapists and the wider interdisciplinary team, including ongoing formal training and informal individualized training. Continually assess learning needs of physiotherapists, and adjust individual professional development plans. Adapt training style, content and frequency to meet individual and team needs.
  • Community Assessment: Carry out need assessments in local communities and identify potential partners, target populations, program intervention models and program sites.
  • Reporting: Prepare and submit reports documenting clinical and training activities and progress achieved toward program objectives. Provide input and feedback for grant reports and proposals.
  • Program Development and Evaluation: Participate in the design and implementation of new programs as well as program evaluation.
  • Community Collaboration and Capacity-Building: Provide training and coordination with other organizations to better address the needs of torture and war trauma survivors. In coordination with Social Workers, support clients in finding appropriate external medical care, as needed.
  • Other duties: Participate in other program and organization-wide activities, meetings and trainings. Complete administrative responsibilities. Performance other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Required education, experience, certificates, licenses or registrations

  • B.S. degree from an accredited/approved school of physiotherapy or physical therapy
  • Licensure or certification as a physiotherapist or physical therapist. For Jordanian nationals – license from the Ministry of Health is required.
  • Extensive experience working as a physiotherapist with a strong orthopedic background.
  • Experience working with trauma and/or managing clients with mental health conditions.
  • Experience working with biopsychosocial approaches.
  • Experience supervising physiotherapists.

Preferred education, experience, certificates, licenses or registrations

  • Masters degree or higher degree in physiotherapy or physical therapy.
  • Work experience with survivors of torture.

Competencies (Knowledge, Skills and Abilities)

  • Fluency in English. Fluency in Arabic preferred
  • Cultural sensitivity awareness in working with diverse staff and client populations.
  • Understanding of and experience with implementing culturally appropriate physiotherapy interventions for people who have suffered torture and trauma.
  • Understanding of and experience developing curriculum and providing training for physiotherapists using experiential learning approaches, and providing training on sensitization on the effects of trauma and war.
  • International experience required. Experience working in the Middle East preferred.
  • Skilled at carrying out needs assessment and program evaluations.
  • Demonstrated flexibility to adapt to changing program requirements, client needs and political climate.
  • Skilled at working as a member of an interdisciplinary team.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills and demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with individuals at all levels.
  • Ability to travel regularly by road to another office about one hour away.
  • Interest in or commitment to human rights
