Kenya: Regional Cholera Coordinator IFRC - Africa

Norwegian Red Cross is a member of the world wide Red Cross Movement working in the fields of relief and assistance and the development of sister Red Cross Societies. Norwegian Red Cross has established regional and country representations, to ensure proximity to key partner Red Cross / Red Crescent Societies as well as donors and international partners.

The Norwegian Red Cross is seeking a dynamic program coordinator, to be seconded to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent societies (IFRC), in Africa region. The coordinator will support the operationalization of the regional cholera framework, at regional and country levels, in Africa. The position will play a key role in technical support and coordination to ensure effective roll out of the cholera framework. The role will be required to support and collaborate with a large network of internal and external networks that are working and innovating in this field, to ensure coordination at field level.

The role requires experience and knowledge of participatory community engagement methods, surveillance, capacity building, and experience in epidemic preparedness and response.

Job purpose:

  • To support the implementation of the IFRC cholera preparedness initiative by providing high quality technical support and coordination, contributing to the overall goals of the Global Task Force on cholera control (GTFCC) Road Map to ending cholera by 2030.

  • To ensure development and roll out of cholera preparedness activities in support of the National Societies and contribute to learning.

  • To ensure the effective coordination and collaboration between relevant internal stakeholders which contribute to improved cholera preparedness and response.

Main responsibilities:

  • Support the NSs in elaboration of key national strategic documents on the fight against cholera.

  • Coordinate with WASH and Health colleagues to ensure integrated community-based activities.

  • Ensure appropriate mapping and evaluation of gaps in cholera related equipment and materials within NSs and ensure prepositioning of such.

  • Collaborate with the Regional Information Management team, ensure systems and platforms capture cholera related data from NSs, providing a consolidated Movement overview/analysis.

  • Support development of community empowerment approaches with Community Engagement and Accountability (CEA) team.

  • With the CBS team, contribute to the ongoing development of community-based surveillance (CBS), support integration/expansion of the activity in conjunction with relevant stakeholders.

  • Ensure a consolidated Movement approach to cholera response.

  • Collaborate with key partners (MOH, WHO, UNICEF, MSF, CDC) and the Private Sector on cholera preparedness and response.

  • Support operational research on RC/RC cholera programming, increase evidence base on the selected interventions, organization of annual Cholera regional meeting: sharing and learning.

  • Support the strengthening of the NDRT/RDRT to have a clear regional surge role in cholera response and support the mobilization of surge support where required in cholera outbreaks.

    Formal requirements:

· University degree (Masters/Advanced) in public health, epidemiology or other health or WASH related sciences is required.

· A minimum of 10 years of professional experience in public health/WASH with specific experience in cholera programming in a developing context.

· Relevant experience in health program/project development and management in the Red Cross is an asset.

· Experience in Regional Coordination.

· 5 years’ management and supervisory experience including budget management (Preferred).

  • Experience working in a RC/RC National Society and/or Federation/ICRC (Preferred).

Skills and knowledge we are looking for:

  • Proven good judgment and ability to work with complete integrity and confidentiality.

  • Ability to work within a multi-cultural, multilingual, multidisciplinary environment.

Languages:

  • Fluency in English and French.
