The Center for Victims of Torture is seeking a Physiotherapist/Trainer to work in Kurdistan, Iraq supporting the work of two locally run torture treatment centers providing specialized orthopedic, trauma and mental health physiotherapy services to internally displaced persons (IDPs). The Physiotherapist/Trainer will provide supervision and specialized training to strengthen physiotherapy programs. Activities include assessment of training needs, training and supervison of physiotherapy staff, interdisciplinary program development, and integration of physiotherapy into the clinical approach for affected community members. The focus of the program is training and coaching staff members. Direct service provision is limited to co-therapy, if requested by the partner centers.

Responsibilities:
- Assessment: Assess the strengths and potential of existing skill sets, systems and methods of physiotherapy service delivery. Develop joint capacity building plans, including goals and implementation, in collaboration with staff of the partner centers and CVT project staff.
- Training: Design and carryout training programs for physiotherapists. Continually assess development needs of physiotherapists and adapt training and coaching accordingly. Assist other clinicians such as mental health counselors, with limited experience of physiotherapy, to understand how physiotherapy can be integrated into treatment approaches and strengthen interdisciplinary clinical practices. Build capacity of staff members to design and conduct training.
- Clinical Supervision: Provide individual and group clinical supervision to local physiotherapists that includes case discussions, mentorship, live supervision, co-therapy, and supervision of supervisors, with emphasis on self-care components. Assist in developing supervision systems. Supervision may focus on a particular content area, such as working with children, working with chronic pain presentations, or facilitating groups.
- Community Collaboration and Capacity-building: Provide training and coordination with other organizations to promote trauma-informed network development and to better address the needs of survivors of torture and war.
- Psychoeducation: Conduct Physiotherapy appropriate elements of psychoeducation workshops for hard-to-reach, marginalized, and vulnerable communities.
- Reporting: Write and submit regular reports regarding clinical and training activities.
- Program Evaluation: Track and ensure program objectives are met. Participate in the implementation of program evaluation.
- Other Duties: Participate in other program and organization-wide activities, meetings and trainings. Complete administrative responsibilities. Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Required education, experience, certificates, licenses or registrations
- Advanced degree in Physiotherapy. Master’s degree or equivalent.
- 5 years of experience providing physiotherapy
- Extensive experience providing individual and group physiotherapy
- 2 years of experience supervising and training physiotherapists
Preferred education, experience, certificates, licenses or registrations
- Physiotherapy credentials (license, registration or certification). Occupational Therapist credentials (or other relevant disciplines) may be considered based on significant relevant experience and training.
- 6 or more years of physiotherapy services
- 3 or more years of experience supervising and training physiotherapists
Competencies (Knowledge, Skills and Abilities)
- Fluency in English, written and spoken. Fluency in Arabic and/or Kurdish an asset.
- Understanding of and experience implementing the following: mental health physiotherapy including trauma informed principles of care; orthopedic trauma physiotherapy including war injuries complex trauma; women’s health/pelvic health physiotherapy including assessment of incontinence, prolapse and SGBV-related symptoms; physiotherapy to children and adolescents; and culturally appropriate interventions for survivors of torture and war trauma.
- Experience supporting staff to maintain personal and professional well-being and to manage job stress and vicarious trauma.
- Experience developing curricula and providing training for physiotherapists on trauma informed care, mental health physiotherapy, chronic pain management, and designing interventions.
- Experience carrying out program needs assessments and program development.
- Appreciation and desire for participating in and receiving clinical supervision.
- Awareness and sensitivity to cultural, political, social and economic contextual factors; cross cultural competence, flexibility, diplomacy and willingness to work within a local partner organizations.
- Experience working with locally-run NGO partner organizations and negotiating multiple relationships within and between organizations.
- Ability to represent organization at high level meetings including national and international organizations and governmental bodies.
- Experience working in low and middle income countries. Experience living in the Middle East, preferred.
- Experience working with interpreters
- Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communications skills
- Excellent working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite (Outlook, Word and Excel)
- Excellent skills in organization, attention to detail and time management in high pressure environment (including the ability to meet deadlines)
- Skilled at working as a member of a team
- Demonstrated flexibility to adapt to changing program requirements, client needs, and political climate
- Ability to travel by car up to 6-10 hours/week between cities
