The Center for Victims of Torture is seeking a Physiotherapist/Trainer to join our program in Jordan addressing the rehabilitation needs of Syrian and Iraqi refugees. The position will oversee physiotherapy services for adults and children who are survivors of torture, war or other violence. The Trainer will provide training and supervision to a team of local physiotherapists who work as part of an interdisciplinary care team with counseling, social work and outreach staff. In addition, the Trainer will raise awareness and provide education and support to enable other NGOs and local organizations to better address the needs of torture and war trauma survivors.

Location: Amman, Jordan

Duration: One year, renewable employment agreement.

We are an international nonprofit dedicated to healing survivors of torture. We offer rehabilitation services to those who have been tortured, train partners around the world who can prevent and treat torture, and advocate for human rights and an end to torture. We are headquartered in Minnesota with offices in Africa and the Middle East.

Primary Responsibilities:

· Training: Design and carryout training programs for physiotherapists – including ongoing training, mentoring, modeling, observing and conducting supervision sessions. Continually assess development of staff and adapt training style, content and frequency to meet their needs.

· Clinical Management: Assist in day-to-day operations of the program to ensure objectives are met. Coordinate physiotherapy team, and strengthen collaboration and mutual understanding with clinical and administrative teams to ensure high quality interdisciplinary care to clients.

· Supervision: Supervise the quality of physiotherapy team activities. Hire, coach, mentor and develop staff members through ongoing feedback as well as formal performance management systems. Meet regularly with team members individually and as a group to monitor progress, provide support and facilitate collaboration. Lead case consultations, observation, debriefing and review of documentation.

· Clinical Assessment: Oversee and train physiotherapists on assessments of clients and determination of appropriate interventions. Review and develop additional assessment and/or outcome measurement tools, as needed.

· Community Assessment and Collaboration: Design and carryout assessments in the community to determine physiotherapy interventions that are available to torture survivors. Network, strengthen collaborations and provide training to other organizations to better address the needs of torture survivors.

· Reporting: Prepare and submit regular reports documenting clinical and training activities and progress achieved toward program goals. Provide input and feedback on grant reports and proposals.

· Monitoring & Evaluation: Participate in the design and implementation of project monitoring plans, validation of tools and manuals, and internal project evaluation. Monitor and ensure adequate data collection of physiotherapy services.

Qualifications:

Required education, experience, certificates, licenses or registrations

  • B.S. degree from an accredited/approved school of physiotherapy or physical therapy
  • 5 years of experience working as a physiotherapist with a strong orthopedic background.
  • Work experience in trauma and chronic pain.
  • Experience supervising physiotherapy professionals

Preferred education, experience, certificates, licenses or registrations

  • Masters degree or higher degree in physiotherapy or physical therapy
  • 7 years of experience working as a physiotherapist.
  • Licensure or certification as a physiotherapist or physical therapy
  • Work experience with survivors of torture

Competencies (Knowledge, Skills and Abilities)

  • Fluency in English. Fluency in Arabic preferred
  • Cultural sensitivity awareness in working with diverse staff and client populations.
  • Understanding of and experience with implementing culturally appropriate physiotherapy interventions for people who have suffered torture and trauma.
  • Understanding of and experience developing curriculum and providing training for physiotherapists using experiential learning approaches, and providing training on sensitization on the effects of trauma and war.
  • International experience required. Experience working in the Middle East preferred.
  • Skilled at carrying out needs assessment and program evaluations.
  • Demonstrated flexibility to adapt to changing program requirements, client needs and political climate.
  • Skilled at working as a member of an interdisciplinary team.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills and demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with individuals at all levels.
  • Ability to travel regularly by road to other locations, about 25-75 minutes each way.
  • Interest in or commitment to human rights
